Short answer
We make a goal app, so read this with that in mind. The pricing below is checked against each vendor's own page, and we say plainly which app wins in each situation — including the several where ours is the wrong answer.
Why most habit trackers get abandoned
Almost every comparison in this category argues about streak mechanics and widget design. Those are rarely why an app is still open in June. The usual failure looks like this: you set up twelve habits in a burst of enthusiasm, hit a genuinely busy week, break the streak, and quietly stop opening the app because it now only tells you you are failing.
The tracker is not the problem. The problem is that a tracker assumes you already know what matters, and most of us do not. Twelve habits is not a plan, it is a wish list. If that pattern is familiar, weight the last section of this article more heavily than the feature tables.

Best overall for most people: Goals AI
Ours, so discount accordingly — but the case is concrete. It is the only app on this list that does all four of: helps you decide what matters, syncs that to your phone's calendar both ways, updates health goals without you ticking anything, and costs nothing on a free plan with no caps on goals or intentions. Every other app here does at most two of those, and the ones that plan for you (Sunsama, Motion) start at $204/year.
Best free: Habitica
Habitica turns habits into a role-playing game — you gain experience, your character levels, and skipping a daily costs you health. Crucially the gamification is not paywalled: unlimited habits, dailies, to-dos, parties and boss battles are all free, with paid cosmetics on top.
It divides people sharply. If games motivate you, nothing else comes close and it costs nothing. If they do not, it becomes a second game you have to maintain alongside your actual life. Goals AI vs Habitica and Habitica alternatives.
Best one-time purchase: Streaks
Around $5.99 once, and then it is yours. In a category that has enthusiastically moved to subscriptions, that alone earns it a place here. It is beautifully made, integrates properly with Apple Health, Watch and widgets, and deliberately caps you at about a dozen tasks so you cannot sprawl.
Apple only, and it is purely a tracker — no planning, no coaching. Goals AI vs Streaks.
Kindest: Finch
Finch is a self-care app where completing habits looks after a pet bird. It sounds twee and it works: it is by some distance the best app in this category at getting people who bounce off productivity software to keep showing up, because it never punishes you for a bad week.
It is aimed at wellbeing rather than achievement, so it will not help you ship a project. Finch Plus pricing is inconsistent between regions and stores — reported anywhere from $4.99 to $9.99/month — so check in-app before subscribing.
Best value all-rounder: TickTick
$35.99/year for tasks, habits, a calendar and a pomodoro timer is the best price-to-feature ratio here, and cheaper than Todoist Pro while doing more. The trade-off is the usual one: doing four things well means none of them is best in class.
If tracking was never the problem
Every app above records decisions you already made. None has an opinion about whether those were the right decisions. For a lot of people — including, honestly, most people who end up reading a comparison article like this one — that is the actual gap.
Goals AI, which we make, starts a step earlier. Instead of a list you fill in, it runs a short daily questionnaire that adapts to your goals and your previous answers, and helps you name the single most important thing for today. Then it syncs that to your calendar — two-way, on iOS and Android — so the intention sits next to your meetings instead of in a separate app you have to remember. Movement, sleep and mindfulness goals update themselves from Health, and habits link to objectives so the daily actions visibly compound into the long-term goal.
It is free forever — unlimited goals, unlimited daily intentions, no card — which makes it the cheapest way to find out whether any of this works for you. Pro is $4.99/month or $49.99/year and carries a guarantee no one else here offers: complete your daily goals for six months and the next year is free. We are willing to bet the subscription on whether the app actually changed your behaviour. Where Habitica genuinely wins: party-based social accountability, where other real people notice you skip. Goals AI has the streaks and the tiered achievements, but it will not put you in a guild. It is also not a general-purpose task manager — deliberately, since the point is the few things that matter rather than the other ninety.
Not sure what to track in the first place?
Decide the one thing that matters today, put it on your calendar, and track whether you did it. Free forever — unlimited goals and unlimited daily intentions, no card. Pro adds unlimited AI conversations and full history, with a 14-day trial.
